Many big box stores and retail chains are closing across the US, including in Nashville. For the love of all things local, we’re exploring some of our favorite alternatives to the familiar franchises.

Joann Fabrics and Crafts

All Joann locations, including the five Nashville-area stores, are set to shut down. Luckily, you can find plenty of new and gently used craft materials — from paints to fabrics — at Smart Art + Craft Supplies. Another sustainable shopping option is Turnip Green Creative Reuse, where you can “pay what you wish” at the Reuse Center.

If you’re yearning for yarn, Camellia Fiber Co. hand dyes it right here in Nashville; Haus of Yarn off White Bridge and Brentwood’s Bliss Yarns also have you covered. For markers, pens, and painting supplies galore, head to Marker Supply and Paper & Ink Arts. Lastly, find fabric for your next project at Fabric House, Botani Fabrics, and Stitchers Garden.

Party City

The party supply store is going out of business. Although our inner child will miss Disney-themed party sets, there are plenty of options to throw a stellar soiree with the help of locally owned businesses like Shindigs & Celebrations and Electric Mixer. For all your dinner party needs, visit Seconds in East Nashville.

Big Lots

Although some locations are expected to remain open, the discount retailer has shuttered stores across Middle Tennessee. We all love a good deal, and you’ll find more than you bargained for at area flea markets, thrift stores, and consignment boutiques. Whether you’re treasure hunting or just browsing, this handy list highlights 25+ spots to score big on savings.
