Want to know if you’re a trendsetter, savvy suburbanite, or a comfortable empty nester?

You can discover what your neighborhood trends say about you with Esri’s interactive Tapestry map. The tech company analyzes zip code data to define the characteristics of individuals in neighborhoods using a process called segmentation.

How it works

This tool sorts areas into 67 unique categories, or segments, based on demographics and socioeconomic characteristics such as age, income + population — AKA, it tells us generally who we are and what we have in common with our neighbors.

Users can input zip codes or click around the map to explore segments that best describe a particular area. In most cases, the results show the top 3 segments that define a neighborhood.

For example, you’ll discover groups like urban chic (professionals living “sophisticated, exclusive lifestyles”) and the young and restless (young, educated workers employed in professional or technical occupations).

Nashville’s tapestry

  • The city’s downtown core and Midtown areas are largely defined as metro renters (educated, highly mobile 30-somethings who enjoy wine bars, yoga + organic foods).
  • In the zip codes that make up Green Hills, Forest Hills, and Oak Hill, between 28%-48% of residents are considered top tier and earn more than 3 times the US median household income.
  • Bellevue’s 37221 ZIP code’s tapestry indicates that 18% of residents are classified as young and restless, 17% are in their retirement years, and 15% are labeled savvy suburbanites.
  • Areas directly south, east, and north of downtown are called emerald city, which can be defined as a mix of renters and home-owners who enjoy foodie culture, music, and arts.

Outside of the segmentation tool, you can do a deeper dive into trending habits based on zip code, right down to shopping preferences + credit card debt.
