Nashville put the pedal to the metal last spring, unveiling the city’s first complete and green street. Now, the 12th Avenue South project is going the distance, landing the No. 12 spot on PeopleForBikes’ ranking of the “Best New US Bike Lanes of 2023 .”

Allow us to backpedal a bit. The 1.5-mile stretch was identified as a top bikeway priority and included in the 2017 WalknBike Plan. Though bike lanes existed, the renovation brought “better, safer facilities” connecting area housing to downtown and other districts. Updates included protected bike lanes, bioswales for stormwater management, bus boarding islands, and safer pedestrian crossings.

What’s next? In case you missed it, the city has entered its community engagement and design phases (aka, they need your help) for East Nashville’s complete streets project along Gallatin Pike and Main Street. Take the online survey .
