October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and while cancer is a word no one wants to hear or think about, it’s something we should talk about.

While both men + women can be diagnosed with breast cancer, 1 out of every 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In 2020, over 325,000 new cases were diagnosed nationally, and 950 Tennessee women died from a new or pre-existing diagnosis.

Whether you’re being proactive, have been diagnosed, or are going through recovery, here are some local resources Nashvillians are fortunate to have access to. ⬇️

  • Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition | This Franklin-based organization provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients through its Emergency Access Fund, which helps alleviate housing costs, medical bills, insurance premiums, and more. Additionally, it offers tips on how to give self-exams, mammogram information, event calendars, and more.
  • Echoes of Hope, Inc. | This nonprofit’s mission is to provide love and supportive care for women of color experiencing disparities in breast, ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancers through support groups, home visits, assistance navigating resources, and more.
  • Tennessee Breast and Cervical Screening Program | This government program provides breast + cervical screening services to uninsured and underinsured women, diagnostic testing for qualifying men and women, and more.

Additionally, check out these upcoming events in support of breast cancer research + those who have been affected. ⬇️

  • Whiskey, Wine, and Cider Festival | Thurs., Oct. 7 | 5:30-9 p.m. | The Bedford Nashville Event Venue, 4319 Sidco Dr. | $50+ | Taste over 20 drinks + enjoy light bites in benefit of the Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition.
  • Making Strides of Nashville | Sat., Oct. 23 | 8 a.m. | Nissan Stadium | Free | Sign up solo or as a team to participate in fundraising for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research and services. A new downtown route (about the length of a 5K) + a shorter option will be available to walk or run.
