While this may seem like good news, over 86,000 Davidson County residents are unable to afford to eat on a regular basis. According to Feeding America data, 12.4% of Davidson County residents faced food insecurity in 2019, with projections of a 6-7% increase due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the holidays, financial hardships often increase the need for accessible food. In honor of giving season, we’re sharing several food pantries + nonprofit organizations in need of volunteers and donations to help fight food insecurity in Nashville.
Second Harvest Food Bank, 331 Great Circle Rd. | Volunteer
In 2020, Second Harvest distributed 48.5 million pounds of food throughout Middle Tennessee. There are various ways to donate + food can be dropped off at the distribution center or bins outside of Kroger stores. Through Dec. 31, all donations are being matched.
The Little Pantry That Could, 2011 24th Ave. N. | Volunteer
Every shopper is provided a one-on-one, judgment-free experience to obtain food free of charge. The food pantry is open every Saturday + serves around 250 families weekly. Gifts like can openers, tents, sleeping bags, and socks are accepted along with food + monetary donations.
The Store, 2009 12th Ave. S. | Volunteer
This free grocery store offers a variety of essential needs to low income families. The Store accepts monetary donations + a portion of merch proceeds go directly towards its mission. Additionally, all donations will be matched through Dec. 31.
Bellevue Community Food Bank, 7501 Old Harding Pk. | Volunteer
Each week, 45-60 families are provided free grocery bags valuing around $50-$100. Monetary, food, and Amazon Wish List donations are accepted.
