From porch to pig pen: How your old pumpkins can feed happy hogs

Instead of just throwing your pumpkins away in the garbage, consider donating them to local farms through Pumpkins For Pigs.

Not sure what to do with your pumpkins this year? We’ve got the perfect recommendation for you. And the answer is a lot cuter than you might think.

Meet Pumpkins For Pigs, a Virginia-based organization founded to reroute leftover pumpkins and other items to farms, sanctuaries, and rescues for feed or compost. What began with 10 local partners has grown into 600+ drop-off sites across the US and Canada.

How you can donate

There are a few locations around Middle Tennessee, including Hummingbird Hill Animal Sanctuary in Nashville. Make sure to check out each farm’s drop-off instructions, as they differ.

Other pumpkin donation options

There are a few other options for your unused gourds around town.

  • Piccolo Farms — Bring uncut, unpainted pumpkins for entry to the annual Pumpkin Harvest event on Saturday, Nov. 8, or donate them directly for animal feed. The farm also accepts produce, pet food, and clean blankets for winter prep.
  • Compost Nashville — The local composting service collects and weighs your pumpkins to show how much waste you’ve diverted, then composts them right here in Middle Tennessee.
  • Nashville Waste Services — Drop off your pumpkins at convenience centers instead of tossing them.

Benefits of donating

According to Pumpkins for Pigs, there are many benefits besides providing food for livestock. Here are just a few:

  • Reduces costs for local farms, sanctuaries, and animal rescues by providing free compost material.
  • Decreases landfill waste, helping extend the lifespan of existing landfills and lessen environmental impact.
  • Strengthens community connections by engaging residents in sustainable, farm-supporting initiatives.
