When reader Betty L. suggested a neighborhood spotlight on Old Hickory, we took it as an opportunity to feature new shops in the area as part of our monthly small business feature. Editor Dylan here, reporting back on where to go for coffee, candy, and books.

Rayon City Cafe
Mid-century modern decor sets the tone at this cafe serving espresso drinks, drip coffee, matcha, and hot teas. On the food side, you can choose from pastries and breakfast bagels.

Duckbill Bookshop
This one-room bookshop is the definition of cozy, with shelves packed from floor to ceiling with fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books. You’ll also want to bookmark the event calendar for author talks, book clubs, and story times.

While in Old Hickory, I also stopped by Dose for breakfast and ordered a wonderful (and super local) vegan sandwich made with BE Hive sausage, Just Egg, and remoulade on a biscuit from East Nashville’s Guerilla Bizkits. I’ve thought about it nearly morning since.
