News Notes

Development

Last week, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously to finalize a 40-year agreement with The Boring Company to bring a tunnel connecting Nashville International Airport to downtown. The airport will receive $300,000 in licensing fees annually (with 3% increases) plus $5 per trip, with no capital investment required from MNAA. (The Tennessean)

Development

Merus has acquired RiverGate Mall and plans a multi-phase redevelopment into a 57-acre mixed-use district. The project will include roughly 700 multifamily units, 100 townhomes, 80 senior housing units, ~130,000 sqft of retail, and public green space. Initial demolition begins this spring, with phased construction through the early 2030s.

Announced

Ascension Saint Thomas announced a $20.6 million freestanding emergency department in Fairview. The 24-hour ER would be the city’s first and part of a new medical campus with Dickson Medical Associates. The project is under review by the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission; if approved, design and construction will follow. (Nashville Business Journal)

Job

Nashville’s Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency is hiring a Deputy Chief Financial Officer. The role, paying $171,452–$192,767, oversees finance, accounting, and reporting for the agency’s multi-million-dollar budget and housing portfolio. Applications close this Thursday, Feb. 26.

Travel

Nashville’s nonstop list keeps growing — and that’s good news for business travelers. Southwest Airlines is adding new 2026 routes to Reno, El Paso, and Manchester-Boston, plus more California flights, making it easier (and faster) to get to key markets without a layover. (The Tennessean)

Learn

Itching to pick up a new skill? Spring registration is open for Vanderbilt’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a no-credit, no-grades program designed for adults age 50 and up. The course catalog includes a mix of 30+ in-person and virtual classes covering music, games, history, writing, and more. Register by Monday, March 9.

Leadership

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is promoting from within, elevating four team members across marketing, social media, HR, and guest experience. The moves signal continued investment in leadership, audience growth, and the visitor experience as the institution expands its reach. (Music Row)

Biz isn’t just numbers — it’s people. Thank you, reader Daniel C., for recommending the Breaking Down Addiction podcast, which shares raw, firsthand stories of addiction and recovery. It’s a reminder that resilience, healing, and second chances show up in every workplace.

We sat down with our CEO, Ryan Johnston, for a behind-the-scenes look at what fuels BizBrief — and him.

Why introduce a business newsletter?

I think of it less as a newsletter and more as a weekly business section.

What problem does your product solve?

Talking about business together and delivering everything you need to make the most of the city you call home. Like NASHtoday, BizBrief will center on strong reader participation and source from traditional media, influencers, and company communications — creating a community that engages with local business news together.

How will BizBrief differ from all the other local business newsletters?

BizBrief will follow the same formula as our daily NASHtoday newsletter — aggregating, curating, narrating, and highlighting the most important business news from across the local business landscape. The goal: to help local businesses and the professionals who work in them thrive.

What podcasts are you listening to?

Founderville, The Growth Project, and Noob School.
