News Notes

Development

Owners of downtown’s Symphony Place tower are planning a rebrand, including updates to the lobby, fresh amenities on the 29,600-sqft green roof, and new retail tenants. The decision comes as ~290,000 sqft of leases expired last month and two of the tower’s largest tenants move this year. (Nashville Business Journal)

Closed

You won’t spot Slim & Husky’s Pizza Beeria at Fifth + Broadway any longer. Earlier this week, the shop closed its downtown outpost as a way to shift focus to “community-rooted locations.” When one door closes, another opens. The brand is currently working on its Factory at Franklin location with hopes of a summer debut. (Nashville Business Journal)

Raider Bites is on our radar. Metro Nashville Public Schools is the eighth district in the US to launch an Intuit food truck. The partnership with the financial technology platform and McGavock High School will allow Career and Technical Education students to gain hands-on experience running the business under chef Jeannine Nava. (WSMV)

Biz

Here comes the bridal boutique. Georgia-based Magnolia Laine will open its first Tennessee location on Friday, April 18 near wine bar Bad Idea — 202 S. 11th St. The biz will serve as a sister store to Franklin’s The White Magnolia Bridal Collection. (Nashville Post)

History

Back when bison roamed Middle Tennessee

Dickerson Pike isn’t the only place you’ll find a dedication to the animal, explore Bison Meadow in Forest Hills. | Screenshot via Google Street View
The herd of bison statues on Dickerson Pike isn’t just another Music City oddity. Much like the polar bears of Edgehill and Charlotte Pike’s pink elephant, there’s a story behind the welcoming committee.

Centuries ago, the animal was native to the state and particularly prominent in Middle Tennessee. Many of Nashville’s roads were inspired by the paths in which bison followed to reach salt licks, or areas in the city where salt was naturally found in the ground.

Early inhabitants and explorers would follow the traces, putting them in close proximity to large quantities of the game animal to hunt for food and clothing. As time wore on and the area’s population grew, bison numbers were dwindling. By 1823, it’s believed they had disappeared from the state entirely.

The statues situated on Dickerson Pike were unveiled in 2009 and serve as a reminder of the animal’s local legacy.
