The statues you see around town first appeared in the 1930s, and by 2016, the animal had become a symbol for the Edgehill neighborhood.
Bear with us
The statues have a storied past — a lot can happen in ~100 years — and it starts with Polar Bear Frozen Custard. There were two locations in Nashville (2609 West End Ave. + 425 Gallatin Rd.), and according to Metro Archives’ Sarah Arntz, the statues were crafted locally by Mattei Plaster Relief Ornamental Company. On theme, the building had a unique architecture style of its own with “icicles hanging from the eves.”
Polar Bear Frozen Custard only remained open for a few years, but the iconic bears made moves for years to come.

After a series of pop-up classes around Nashville, including a love-themed mixology workshop coming up on Valentine’s Day, NYC-based Tipsy Scoop will open its brick-and-mortar space on the ground floor of Sentral SoBro Apartments in April.
Described as a “boozy ice cream barlour,” Tipsy Scoop takes inspiration from cocktails to infuse its ice cream and sorbet with liquor. Beyond the scoops, sundaes, flights, and cocktails, Nashville will even have its own signature flavor: Ice cream infused with Jackson Morgan salted caramel whiskey cream liqueur.
Other creations on the flavor menu include the Elvis Whiskey Midnight Snack and a Cake Batter Vodka Martini. For the under 21 and non-drinking crowd, there are eight alcohol-free options mimicking a spritz, margarita, and traditional ice creams.

Once I go down the local history rabbit hole, I have a hard time finding a stopping point. Today was no exception. I came across an article by the Washington Post comparing D.C. shop Beck’s Frozen Custard, which opened around the same time as Polar Bear Frozen Custard, to another competitor. While I didn’t find a connection between the two, I thought the visual similarities of the concepts were worth sharing with you. Polar bears are pretty popular, huh?
