Business is on a roll in the Gulch...

A top down photo of a Sushi | Bar menu book and small plates of sushi rolls on a table.
Here’s a look at the Dallas location in action. | Phtoto via Sushi | Bar
... and the summer opening of Sushi | Bar gives a whole new meaning to that.

The 17-course omakase-style speakeasy will only offer 12 seats per experience when it opens at 610 Magazine St., formerly Barista Parlor Golden Sound, on July 18. Don’t sweat it — before we get into more details, we’ll pause and let you put in that reservation now.

The restaurant, which also has locations in Austin, Miami, Chicago, and Dallas, is meant to feel like “an intimate dinner party.” A cap of three seatings a night, beginning at $165 per person, allows guests to have a two-hour, front row seat as three chefs prepare a seasonal tasting menu before their eyes (with sake and beverage pairings, of course).

No reservation, no problem. You can still enjoy the new space (more on what that will look like below) by opting for the separate entrance to Golden Sound, Sushi | Bar Hospitality’s new cocktail lounge concept. Bonus: The bar program also features sub-zero martinis, highballs, and golden draft espresso martinis.

Remick Architecture is transforming the dining destination and taking inspiration from the space’s former life as a 1960s recording studio. The bar area is described as having a “sexy atmosphere” with its curved leather banquette, whereas the interior of Sushi | Bar puts the attention on the menu. A muted palette, natural materials, and intentional lighting nod to Japanese design.

Yesterday, we asked: Which of the following shops was NOT one of Hickory Hollow Mall’s original anchor stores?

Your options included Sears, Castner Knott, JCPenney, and Cain-Sloan — and we even gave you a hint. The shop was later added as an anchor store in 1982, four years after Hickory Hollow Mall opened.

Mall memories might be a little foggy. Out of 94 respondents, only ~29% had it in the (shopping) bag with JCPenney. Cain-Sloan and Sears were neck in neck with a high number of guesses as well.
