School is back in session

Learn something new with University School of Nashville

Want to pick up new skills in the new year? For over three decades, Nashvillians have looked to the University School of Nashville’s Evening Classes Program.

This year’s course catalog covers a variety of topics, from astronomy and interior design to cooking and current events. We’ve compiled a sampling below, but be sure to bookmark the full calendar. Note: Classes are open to ages 21 and up.

🥤 Food and bev fun

  • Proper Sake | Tuesday, Jan. 30 | 6:30-8:30 p.m. | $150 | Explore the world of sake brewing over a five-course, family-style dinner with pairings.
  • Beer and Pretzel Twisting with Von Elrod’s | Tuesday, Feb. 13 | 6-8 p.m. | $85 | Each participant will roll two pretzels and taste a variety of beers.
  • A Tasty Blast from the Past | Wednesday, March 6 | 6-8 p.m. | $80 | Gather at Elliston Place Soda Shop to learn about the glory days of soda fountains and try classics like phosphates, floats, and sodas — burger and fries included.

🧶 Discover a new hobby

  • Drawing Workshop | Thursday, Feb. 29 | 6-8 p.m. | $60 | Instructor Angus Galloway will discuss, demonstrate, and teach the art of two-handed drawing.
  • Beginning Crochet | Monday, March 4 | 6-8:30 p.m. | $50 | Come ready to learn the basics as you crochet cotton dishcloths.
  • Build Your Own Terrarium at AshBlue | Saturday, April 6 | 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. | $100 | Decorate your self-made terrarium with ferns, tropical plants, rocks, and moss.

🎨 Go behind the scenes

  • Frist Art Museum | Thursday, Feb. 15 | 6-7 p.m. | $35 | Join Mark Scala, the museum’s chief curator, for a tour of the “Southern/Modern” exhibition.
  • An Evening with the Nashville Symphony | Saturday, Feb. 24 | 5-8 p.m. | $40 | The program includes a tour of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, a lecture by conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, and a Nashville Symphony performance.

  • A new grocery store is coming to Madison. Sprouts Farmers Market is set to open in 2025 at Shoppes at Rivergate — 2156 Gallatin Pike N. The organic grocer has locations in Bellevue and South Nashville. (Nashville Business Journal)

  • The Tennessee Titans defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-20 yesterday to finish the season with a 6-11 record. It was another historic day for Derrick Henry, who passed Earl Campbell for most 100-yard rushing games in franchise history. Read the full recap.

Commemorating MLK Day in Nashville

Martin Luther King Jr. Day events in Nashville

Monday, Jan. 15 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and several Nashville organizations are hosting events, volunteer opportunities, and celebrations of life.

The annual Nashville MLK Day begins Wednesday, Jan. 10 with daily events held through Monday, Jan. 15, including presentations, a youth symposium, a march along Jefferson Street, and a convocation at TSU’s Gentry Center. Poet Nikki Giovanni is this year’s keynote speaker.

Here are a few other events commemorating the life, work, and legacy of Dr. King:
  • MLK Joint Day of Service | Saturday, Jan. 13 | 11 a.m.-4 p.m. | A day of volunteering for students, faculty, and staff at Nashville-area colleges.
  • Let Freedom Sing | Sunday, Jan. 14 | 7:30 p.m. | The Nashville Symphony performs a free community concert with special guests.
  • Volunteer Tree Planting | Monday, Jan. 15 | 9-11 a.m. | Help plant 50 trees in the Bordeaux area of Nashville — tools and gloves will be provided.
  • Vanderbilt University | Monday, Jan. 15 | 1:30 p.m. | Vanderbilt hosts keynote speaker Khalil Ekulona of WPLN’s “This Is Nashville.” The event also will be livestreamed.
