Stepped outside in the past 24 hours? You’re already acquainted with Nashville’s latest heat wave.

Forecasters issued a heat advisory yesterday and predict the roasting temps will last all week — with high temps in the upper 90s and heat indexes peaking around 107 degrees each afternoon. A second heat advisory goes in effect at 12 p.m. today and remains until 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 25.

When will things cool down? Sunday, Aug. 27 is expected to be the first day it dips below 90 degrees. Until then, NES has suspended service disconnections. The Office of Emergency Management plans to activate mobile or stationary cooling stations if heat indexes reach 110 degrees for a “prolonged period of time.”

Here are a few tips:
  • Check daily forecasts via the NWS Nashville website + follow the office on social media for updates.
  • Looking for ways to stay cool indoors? Our guide to Nashville museums is a great place to start (read: 15+ air conditioned buildings). Catch up on your summer reading at one of the many Nashville Public Library branches.
  • Experts recommend limiting time outdoors during heat advisories. But once the temps drop back down, consider heading to one of our local pools.
  • Try to stay cool by wearing loose-fitting, light clothing. Now’s the perfect chance to check out recently-opened shops inside the Nashville Farmers Market, including nashTN and Made in Tennessee.
Long story short: It’ll be hot this week, but no sweat, we’ll make it through.

If you need a sign to see “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer” (yep, even in IMAX 70mm), consider this it. In addition to new releases, several 2023 films will return to select theaters, including:
  • “The Little Mermaid” (sing-along edition)
  • “Super Mario Bros: The Movie”
  • “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”

Early bird gets “Lady Bird” on National Cinema Day. If you’re a fan of Greta Gerwig’s 2017 film starring Saoirse Ronan, it’s returning to theaters for the special day. Popcorn for breakfast, anyone? The only local screening is at Regal Opry Mills at 9:35 a.m.
