As of yesterday, the Jefferson Street Sound Museum and the Museum of Christian and Gospel Music are now official sites on the US Civil Rights Trail.
Jefferson Street Sound Museum
The museum highlights Jefferson Street’s history as a cultural and musical corridor, particularly from the 1940s to 1970s, when clubs and venues hosted artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, James Brown, and Tina Turner. The museum offers tours by appointment during the week and public tours on Saturdays.
Museum of Christian & Gospel Music
Located on Commerce Street, the museum opened last year and houses the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame, as well as rotating exhibits.
With these additions, Tennessee is now home to 17 sites along the US Civil Rights Trail, including local landmarks such as the National Museum of African American Music and NPL’s Civil Rights Room.
