Let’s talk ghosts — and no, not the paranormal type. Today, we’re diving into ghost signs.
They’re the old painted advertisements on brick buildings that once promoted local businesses. Many of Nashville’s old signs have faded with time, but we looked into the stories behind four of them.
Gruhn Guitars, 400 Broadway
In 1970, George Gruhn opened GTR Incorporated on 4th Avenue. Named for partners George Gruhn, Tut Taylor, and Randy Wood — and for the word “guitar” — the shop later became Gruhn Guitars. After 15 years at its second location (410 Broadway), the shop moved a few doors down, where its ghost sign can still be seen today. The business now operates on 8th Avenue.
Which piece of Nashville history should we dig into next?
A. When the Cumberland River froze over in 1940 B. Nashville’s off-Broadway neon signs C. Quirky laws and strange headlines from the past D. Other — share your suggestions

Wow, what a joy it was to write this newsletter from a patio yesterday. It was the first day I stepped outside and thought, “Yep, it’s finally fall.” The cooler air even has me eyeing last-minute tickets to Tyler Childers at GEODIS Park this weekend — maybe I’ll see some of y’all there.
