What Antioch’s Global Mall site could look like in the future

A plan to redevelop Antioch’s Global Mall, formerly known as Hickory Hollow Mall, is gaining momentum with the draft concept now available for review.
Metro Planning anticipates releasing a final concept plan later this summer, so let’s put on our hard hats and look into ways this space could be revitalized + how you can get involved.
The site
The Global Mall site is situated southeast of downtown along Bell Road and consists of four anchor buildings. Nashville State Community College and the Southeast Community Center and library occupy two buildings, with plans for a KIPP school in the former Macy’s building.
Metro acquired most of the mall site in 2022 and kicked off the redevelopment study in October.

The plan
The study area spans 350 acres and is based on feedback from community meetings. The plan in its current form looks to incorporate:
Transit center
Existing buildings housing the community center, library, and Ford Ice Center
Mixed-use buildings with housing and ground-floor retail
Parking garage
Hotel
Office and co-working spaces
Space for performing arts, museums, or other civic use
Retail, restaurants, and art studios
The multi-phase development would be anchored by a “town square” with ample green space and an “arts way” with a focus on housing for artists, galleries, and startup businesses.
In March 2022, Metro and Vanderbilt expressed plans for a 600,000-sqft health care facility in the mall’s interior; however, this proposal is absent from the most recent draft and may be incorporated into the redevelopment in other ways.
This area of the draft plan is called “Innovation Boulevard,” which would include a mix of office, health care, and other uses. | Rendering via Metro Planning
Next steps
If you missed the community meetings this month, there’s still time to get involved. Metro Planning launched an online survey, as well as an interactive mapping tool that allows you to pinpoint exactly what you love — or perhaps dislike — about the draft plan.
Bookmark the project page and stay tuned for the final concept plan later this summer. The final version will ultimately require Metro Council approval.
