📚 Are you up for the challenge?

How’s your summer reading list coming along? Nashville Public Library is making sure it stays stacked with the annual Summer Reading Challenge, underway now through Monday, July 31.

The theme is “Nashville Works Together” and — just like every great mystery novel — this year’s challenge comes with a twist.

New in 2023

NPL is making this summer of reading a summer of giving. At the end of the challenge, the library will split a $9,000 donation to Book’em, Nashville Humane Association, and Oasis Center.

Here’s where the challenge comes in: For every 15 days you read — audio books count, too — you earn a vote to cast for one of the three nonprofits. When the challenge wraps up, NPL will tally the votes and donate $4,000 (first place), $3,000 (second place), and $2,000 (third place).

Finishing a good book (and supporting Nashville nonprofits) is a reward in itself, but prizes are also up for grabs. Participants will receive coupons to local businesses for every 15 days of reading, and each of the 21 NPL locations will award a $150 gift card to a variety of bookstores.

How it works

  • Register via NPL’s website, in the Beanstack app, or keep track with a paper log (available at eight participating locations).
  • Log your days read and track activities completed.
  • Redeem your coupons + vote for the nonprofit of your choice by putting your tickets in their virtual bucket in the Beanstack app.
Bonus: Those who register will receive a reusable Nashville Public Library bag — you know, to carry all your library books.

Ready to hit the road? The LGBTQ History Driving Tour begins on Commerce Street and ends at Vanderbilt University. The self-guided tour includes historical context for each stop, as well as audio narration, directions, and parking information.
  • Time: ~2 hours
  • Distance: 30 miles
  • Number of sites: 16
Stop 1: The Jungle and Juanita’s, 715 Commerce St. | “These two businesses made their mark on Nashville history as the earliest and best-known gay bars in the post-WWII era.”
