Many readers have asked us for details on fun + fascinating things to do in Nashville as an older adult. We put out thecall to readers and did some research of our ownto assemble this list of Music City activities.
🧠 For the curious mind
Vanderbilt University launched the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a relaxed learning environment (yes, that means no homework or tests) designed for adults 50 years and older. Explore a variety of topics from writing and art to history and music through low-cost, noncredit courses, programs, and trips.
Winter 2023 registration has closed, but you can still call to be considered for late registration, or sign-up for email updates about registration dates and special events. Bonus: Many courses are recorded.
🏓 For the athlete
Let’s move. There are plenty of ways to get your blood pumping. Reader Cindy G. is interested in playing pickleball, and our local parks and rec centers are a great place to start for older adult-specific leagues.
Davidson County: Activities like dance and other sports designed for adults ages 55+ can be accessed via the “senior adult recreational program” at either the East Regional Center, Elizabeth Senior Center, or Hadley Regional Center.
Wilson County: Mt. Juliet Parks & Recreation offers pickleball for ages 55+ at a cost of $2 after your membership purchase — choose between competitive, beginners, or intermediate play.
Williamson County: Registration is open for the cornhole league ($20, February-March) + a pickleball tournament (February 17, $25). Open pickleball (adults 50+) and Wii bowling play cost $1.
Explore yoga, cardio, dance, strength, and circuit classes through the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s “Active Older Adults” program (ages 65+). Eligible members may qualify for free or low-cost membership plans.

Road closures for Governor Bill Lee’s inauguration ceremony commencing his second term will begin downtown by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20. See the full list. Pro tip: Free parking for event attendees will be available in three state lots + one parking garage at the corners of Harrison Street and Rep. John Lewis Way.

Who let the dogs out. A combination dog park and bar is set to open in The Nations (5701 Centennial Blvd.) in late summer. Urban Dog Bar will house an indoor space and a 15,500-sqft outdoor area. Dog owners will be required to purchase a daily, monthly, or annual membership pass. 🐕 (Nashville Post)
Shake Shack has plans for a fifth Nashville area location, based on Metro permits. The chain is eyeing an opening in River North’s The Landings — a waterfront development near Topgolf. An opening date has not been released. (Nashville Business Journal)

9.5 million. That’s the 2022 record-breaking number of hotel room nights sold in a single year, according to information released by the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. October was a record month with 935,778 rooms sold and $12.86 million in hotel tax collections. View 2023 projections. 💰
Edu
Tennessee State University will spend the $250 million provided by the state — the largest investment to a historically black university by a state — on updates to six campus buildings. The funding package was allocated in April 2022 for infrastructure developments and major improvements.
Concert
Ricardo Arjona will bring his “Blanco Y Negro: Volver” tour to Bridgestone Arena on Sunday, May 28. Tickets go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m.
Outdoors
Nashville Sites has added a new walking tour to its roster. Learn more about the Edgehill neighborhood via its 1.6-mile route, which should take ~1.5 hours. The self-guided tour features 10 sites with accompanying audio, including William Edmondson’s home and the Edgehill polar bears. You can also tour virtually. 🚶
Cause
Volunteer with the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Mill Ridge Park — 12965 Old Hickory Blvd. From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., volunteers will construct garden beds, plant trees, and clean up trailheads, among other things. Register now.
