Whether you’re searching for a Black Friday alternative or wish for a post-shopping outdoor adventure, Tennessee State Parks is bringing back its annual Day After Thanksgiving Hikes on Friday.

Many of the free, guided hikes are suitable for all ages and abilities and range from peaceful strolls to off-trail excursions. If you want to embark on a self-guided hike with friends and family — we have tips for that, too.

Strap on your hiking boots and check out 10 hikes within a ~1 hour drive of Nashville. Pro tip: Individual hikes typically fill up quickly, so be sure to register in advance.

🥾 Join a guided hike

  • Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, Nashville | 3-4 p.m. | This hike is on a flat and paved sidewalk and is suitable for all ages — leashed dogs are welcome.

  • Harris Ridge Trail Project at Radnor Lake, Nashville | 2-5 p.m. | This off-trail strenuous hike to one of the park’s newest ridgetops will include a half hour segment for volunteers to learn about and pull invasive plants on Harris Ridge — the hike will conclude with a sunset view atop the ridge + hikers should bring bottled water, a headlamp, gloves, and a walking stick if desired.
  • Bledsoe Creek State Park, Gallatin | 1 p.m. | This 3-mile hike on the High Ridge and Shoreline trails is considered “moderately strenuous.”
  • Harpeth River State Park, Kingston Springs | 9-10:30 a.m. | Meet at the Harris Street Bridge parking lot for a “moderately difficult” 1.6-mile hike through the Narrows of the Harpeth.

Anchor Down or Rocky Top? It’s rivalry week across the college football nation, meaning the Vanderbilt Commodores and the Tennessee Vols will face off at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville on Saturday.

Much like the rivalries between Alabama and Auburn (hey, Iron Bowl) or South Carolina and Clemson (hey, Palmetto Bowl), Vanderbilt and Tennessee have been competitive, in-state rivals since 1892.

Tennessee holds a 78-33-5 lead in the series — meaning the Vols have won 78 games, the Commodores have won 33 games, and there have been five ties (in 1900, 1919, 1927, 1932, and 1974). Here are a few things to know heading into Saturday’s showdown — plus, let us know who you’ll be cheering for.
  • Kickoff: 6:30 p.m. CT
  • Tickets: The game is officially sold out, including tailgate parking lots.
  • How to watch: Tune in via the SEC Network.
  • Vanderbilt’s record: 5-6 (2-5 SEC)
  • Tennessee’s record: 9-2 (5-2 SEC)
  • Outlook: Tennessee has won its last three matchups against Vanderbilt, but the ‘Dores are looking to take home the W after winning back-to-back SEC games for the first time since 2018.
Pro tip: FirstBank Stadium observes a clear bag policy.
