Book lovers, rejoice. The 34th Annual Southern Festival of Books returns to downtown this Fri., Oct. 14 for three fun-filled days celebrating the written word + highlighting local and national authors.

After two years of virtual programming, the annual literary festival will be held in person at War Memorial Plaza and the Nashville Public Library’s Main Branch. This year’s event is a real page-turner, so be sure to bookmark this guide to make the most out of the free festival.

📚 The prologue

Before you head out the door, you’ll want to look over the full schedule or download the festival app — available on Apple and Android devices — featuring a map with all the vendors. Need a tote to carry around all your books? Be sure to check out new merch available on the festival grounds.

📚 The chapters

The Southern Festival of Books is known for hosting a wide variety of programming, and this year is no different with:
  • Authors, publishers, and booksellers
  • Author talks and signings
  • Music, performing arts, and youth stages
  • Food trucks, a beer garden, and vendors
There’s something for everyone. For music lovers, check out conversations with author and music journalist Marissa R. Moss + singer-songwriter Margo Price. Drawn to poetry and spoken word? Don’t miss poets in conversation each day + on the performance stage. Children’s literature is also in the spotlight with appearances by author and actor Diane Kruger + celeb pup Doug the Pug.

📚 The epilogue

Just like a good book, the festival will come to an end on Sunday afternoon. But thanks to the festival’s host, Humanities Tennessee, there are many opportunities to celebrate the arts, including the written word, throughout the year. Be sure to bookmark the organization’s calendar to keep up with local happenings.

Editor’s pick: I know it’s only Wednesday, but I’m so looking forward to this weekend. Not only do I get to stock up on new reads at the Southern Festival of Books, but BE-Hive’s 3rd annual Bar-BE-Cue sounds so fun. My go-to vegan pop-up Radical Rabbit will be there, but I’m also excited to try Guerilla Bizkits for the first time (I know, I’m so behind).
